Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.

CellCept (mycophenolate mofetil) is an immunosuppressant predominantly used to help stop rejection of a transplanted organ, usually the heart, kidney, or liver. Off-label some patients buy CellCept to treat immune disorders, such as lupus.

With doctor approval this medication can be used in any age. In children dosage is typically based on body size.

Other medications are almost always used with CellCept, particularly cyclosporine and corticosteroids, though other medications may also be used.

There are many factors that can influence dosage and duration of treatment. Patients who buy CellCept are strongly advised to follow doctor instructions and attend all checkups. Checkups not only help ensure the medication is working as intended, but also can monitor for developing side effects, some of which can be quite serious if not caught early.

How It Works

CellCept works similarly to any other immunosuppressant; it inhibits the immune system. Following an organ transplant the immune system may target the new organ as foreign, and work to destroy it. Patients buy CellCept to help prevent this from happening.

All patients who undergo an organ transplant will spend time in the hospital. Treatment with CellCept typically begins under 24 hours after surgery, though for the first few days it will likely be administered by injection or IV infusion. Patients are typically switched to taking the medication orally as soon as possible, and at home oral treatment will continue.

It is possible to buy CellCept in an oral suspension for use in young children or patients who are fed via a gastric tube.

Treatment Overview

Aside from intravenous or injectable formulas, which are typically reserved for hospital use, patients can buy CellCept in three ways:

  • Capsules (250 mg each)
  • Tablets (500 mg each)
  • Oral Suspension (200 mg/mL)

The oral suspension may be prepared by a pharmacist, though some patients prefer to buy it as a powder and mix it with fluids themselves. In all cases patients, caretakers, and others in the household should take care to avoid breathing the powder associated with oral suspension mixes and tablets. Hands should be washed after handling these to prevent getting residue in the eyes.

Both tablets and capsules should be swallowed whole and not chewed, split, or otherwise damaged. Patients unable to swallow whole pills will want to get the oral suspension.

Multiple tablets or capsules are typically needed to make a whole dose; this is fine. For example, if a patient needs to take a 1 gram dose, taking two 500 mg tablets or four 250 mg capsules will do the job.

General guidelines for adults:

  • For heart or liver transplants, most patients take 1.5 g twice per day, for a total daily dose of 3 g.
  • For kidney transplants, most patients take 1 g twice per day, for a total daily dose of 2 g.
  • Some kidney transplant patients are given 1.5 g twice per day, for a total daily dose of 3 g, though studies suggest those taking 2 g per day had equal benefit with fewer serious adverse reactions.

Of course, there are many variables that can influence dosage; other medical conditions, other medications being taken, patient response to treatment, and so forth can all cause dosage to be raised or lowered. Doctor instructions should always be followed, even if they deviate considerably from the above guidelines.

Warnings Before Use

Patients planning to buy CellCept should be aware of some factors that will be present throughout treatment.

First, as an immunosuppressant, CellCept causes patients to be at increased risk of a serious infection. Patients should avoid scenarios where infection is likely, such as crowded public places, and take care to thoroughly clean and care for even the smallest of injuries. Immunizations should likewise be avoided. A doctor can explain warning signs to be alert for.

Second, patients taking CellCept are at increased risk of getting certain types of cancer, particularly skin cancer. Again patients should be alert for symptoms; any abnormality of the skin should be seen by a doctor.

Third, the medication sometimes causes very low white blood cell counts and gastrointestinal bleeding. If blood counts or gastrointestinal bleeding become severe enough and cannot be effectively treated otherwise, treatment with CellCept will likely need to end and alternative treatments tried.

Fourth, CellCept is associated with birth defects and miscarriage. With respect to conception of a child, both genders risk birth defects; a man taking CellCept should not impregnate a woman during treatment or for 90 days after treatment ends. Women who are pregnant should strictly avoid this medication if possible. Women who buy CellCept should also be aware that it may reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills; other methods of birth control should be utilized.

Finally, patients should avoid donating blood or semen during treatment and for 90 days following the end of treatment.
